Frequently Asked Questions

About Technical Problems

Q: I am having problems viewing the .PDF documents.
A: Try installing, or re-installing Adobe Acrobat Reader. The latest version is available for free at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
If you already have Acrobat Reader installed on your system, uninstall it first, then re-install the new version.

About the Project

Q: Do I have to be a Buddhist, Tibetan Buddhist, Kagyupa, or Nyingmapa to participate?
A: No. We warmly invite all who are inspired by this project to participate.

Q: Is anyone making any money by organizing or participating in this?
A: No.

About the Practice

Q: The practice page talks about receiving an empowerment. What's that?
A: An empowerment, also known by its Sanskrit term abhisheka, is a formal introduction given by a lineage master to a particular deity yoga practice, usually performed through a ritual ceremony.

Q: Do I need a Vajrasattva empowerment to do this practice?
A: No. You can do the basic form of the practice without an empowerment.

Q: I received a reading transmission to do Vajrasattva practice as part of ngondro. Was that an empowerment?
A: No. A reading transmission is not the same as an empowerment. In Tibetan, the former is lung and the latter is wang.

Q: I am doing the 100-syllable Vajrasattva mantra practice, or using another Vajrasattva practice liturgy. Can I submit my numbers to the total count?
A: Yes, please do, on a one-for-one basis, meaning one 100-syllabe recitation counts as one recitation, the same as a 6-syllable recitation.

Q: Can I submit a count of mantras accumulated before December 11th, 2001?
A: No. In order to preserve the integrity and power of this count, we ask that you only submit numbers accumulated after you first heard about the project.

About Registering to Participate

Q: There are several of us at my local center who want to participate in the project. Should we register together as a center or separately as individials?
A: Please elect a Count Coordinator amongst yourselves to gather and submit your total count as a center. This makes the overall tally much easier to handle!

Q: Do I have to be an official representative of my sangha to register us and serve as Count Coordinator?
A: No. Your sangha coordinators probably have enough to do already, so if you are so inspired, you can volunteer to be the Prayer4Peace.net coordinator at your local center. However, we recommend that you speak with your sangha at large and/or its coordinators before registering on their behalf. This is to assure general sangha support as well as to avoid duplicate submissions.

Prayer4Peace.net is coordinated by Nalandabodhi International
